board of directors
Our Board of Directors is comprised of our President, Vice President, Treasurer, Secretary, and five Board Members who meet monthly to discuss and vote on events affecting the Michigan Men’s Rowing Team.

Ian is a member of UMRT Class of 2008. As a senior, Ian was the stroke seat of the Varsity Eight which competed for the last time at the IRA National Championship Regatta and for the first time at the American Collegiate Rowing Association (ACRA) National Championship Regatta where the Michigan Men’s Varsity Eight won gold.
Ian joined the MRA Board in 2013 and has held the positions of Secretary and his current role of Treasurer over that period. Wes joined MRA in November 2016 after having served as the President of the Team during the ‘14-’15 year and then representing the team and all other club teams as the President of the Club Sports Council during the ‘15-’16 year. Shortly after joining MRA, Wes started the Board’s investigations into permanent indoor training facilities for the team and has helped the Board with planning the future of the team. Wes joined the Board because rowing for the University of Michigan Men’s team was the defining experience of his collegiate career - especially considering he has yet to give up the dream of rowing as he continues to train after graduating - and he hopes to be able to give back to the team for everything it taught him and provide those same experiences for the future generations of Michigan rowers and coxswains.
Ted Matherly has served on the board of MRA since graduating from Michigan in 2006. He has also continued to be involved in rowing, as a coach for the University of Maryland and Oklahoma State University, and occasionally racing his single as a Masters rower.
Ted is currently an assistant professor of marketing at Oklahoma State University's Spears School of Business. His research focuses on applications of signaling theory in consumer and brand behavior.
Antonio (Tony) Sifuentes joined MRA as a Board Member in 2014 and may be best known for hosting the annual MRA Alumni & Friends tailgate in recent years. Antonio finished his rowing career in 2008 when he stroked the 2V at both the IRA and the inaugural ACRA Championships.
Antonio also works for General Motors as a Manager of Strategy and Planning where he is responsible for defining the next generation of vehicles across the global portfolio.
Philip joined the MRA board in May 2018, a year after he graduated from the University of Michigan. He joined the board because of the immense impact the Michigan Men’s Rowing Team had on his development during his years in college. Philip’s driving motive as a board member is to ensure that the Michigan Men’s Rowing Team not only continues to set high-reaching competitive, athletic, and academic goals for its athletes, but has the resources, support, and guidance to accomplish them year after year.
Philip’s most memorable experience on the rowing team was winning the 2V ACRA Gold medal by less than a second his senior year by sprinting through UVA in the last 200 meters of the race.
Dan is a member of UMRT Class of 2009 where he was a three year Varsity Eight Oarsman, two time American Collegiate Rowing Association (ACRA) National Champion, and two time member of the ACRA All American Team. After graduating, Dan was the assistant novice coach in 2010 while he attended law school at Wayne State University.
Dan is a patent attorney at TD Ameritrade in Ann Arbor where he oversees TD Ameritrade's patent portfolio and manages the intellectual property of the fourth largest broker dealer in the United States. Prior to serving as TD Ameritrade's patent counsel, Dan worked as outside patent counsel at a private firm in Metro Detroit. Dan joined MRA in 2018 and coaches UMRT when he's not working or spending time with his family in Northern Michigan.
Tom is a member of the class of 2007 and joined the MRA Board in December 2018. Despite being seat raced out of the 1F in his freshman year, he was a three-year member of the Varsity Eight at Michigan and continued on in the sport after graduating, making US National Teams starting in 2007 with the U23 team and making Senior team appearances from 2010 through 2018. Tom's international highlights include placing 8th in the Men's Pair at the 2012 Olympic Games and earning bronze and silver medal finishes in the Men's Eight at the 2013 and 2017 World Rowing Championships, respectively. He continues to train at the USRowing Training Center with the aim of competing in the 2020 Olympics.
International rowing, however, does not pay the bills, and so Tom currently works at Kaiser Permanente in Oakland, California as a Project Manager in the Technology Risk Office.
